Chuck Billy Outlines 'Souls Of Black' Remix Set for 2027

Chuck Billy has confirmed that a remixed version of Testament's 1990s staple, "Souls Of Black", is slated for a 2027 release. Speaking with Metal Express Radio, Billy explained that the band has been reclaiming their catalog from Atlantic Records, with "Souls Of Black" being the latest project to undergo a full remix rather than a simple remaster.

Unlike the earlier remasters of "The Legacy", "The New Order", and "Practice What You Preach"—which were necessary due to missing master tapes—the team had the original tracks for "Souls Of Black" available. This allowed them to overhaul the production to fix what they deemed a dated sound. Billy noted that the original production was left to the engineers at the time, resulting in vocals that were "all wet and reverbed out". The new version aims for a heavier, more direct feel where the guitars hit much harder.

It sounds so good. Really modern sound and raw.

Despite the overhaul, Billy insisted that his original vocal performances remained intact, stating he was happy with the tracks and found no need for re-recording. The band is currently pushing the original version through Nuclear Blast, with the revamped version scheduled for release once the packaging is finalised in 2027. This move follows a successful era of re-releases under their new partnership with the label, which began with the 2023 restoration of their early catalogue.
