Flotsam and Jetsam Face Logistical Hurdles for U.S. Touring

Flotsam and Jetsam frontman Eric "A.K." Knutson has laid bare the harsh financial realities that make touring across the United States a daunting prospect for the Arizona veterans. Speaking with Dimitris Kontogeorgakos of Metal Kaoz, Knutson admitted that unless the band secures a high-quality package deal, US dates are often not financially viable compared to their European counterparts.

Knutson explained that the sheer scale and cost of American logistics—including transport and crew—often leave bands with little profit. "When we go on a US tour, I drive because we can't afford a driver," Knutson revealed. He noted that without massive guarantees like those enjoyed by bands such as Testament, the costs for buses and staff frequently eat into the budget until there is nothing left. While their merchandise sales provide a necessary cushion, the disparity between American and European turnouts makes the latter much more appealing from a business standpoint.

Bottom lines are bottom lines, and we get twice as many fans at the shows, and we make twice as much money over in Europe.

Despite these hurdles, the band remains active as they prepare to release "Rats In The Temple" via Napalm Records on August 28, 2026. This upcoming release marks 40 years since their debut, "Doomsday For The Deceiver". The current lineup features Knutson alongside guitarists Michael Gilbert and Steve Conley, drummer Ken Mary, and bassist Bill Bodily. While the band aims to get something moving in the States eventually, they are currently navigating the difficult balance between reaching their American fanbase and maintaining a sustainable touring model.
