Amaranthe Set Sights on Gothenburg Metal Roots for New Material
Elize Ryd confirms that the band's next album will move away from recent experimentation towards a classic Gothenburg sound.
AMARANTHE vocalist Elize Ryd has confirmed that the band's upcoming record will steer towards a more traditional 'Gothenburg metal' sound. Speaking to Finland's Chaoszine, Ryd noted that the new material aims to reclaim the signature riffs that fans of the genre adore, moving away from the experimental direction seen over the last few years.
While their 2024 release, 'The Catalyst', was noted for its unique direction, the new material will be the second to feature Mikael Sehlin on growls. Ryd highlighted the synergy with Sehlin, who joined in 2023 and fills a role similar to former vocalist Henrik Englund Wilhelmsson. The band is currently in the production phase, with drum tracking scheduled to begin in collaboration with longtime Danish producer Jacob Hansen.
It's a little bit back-to-the-roots kind of Gothenburg metal sound.
Guitarist Olof Mörck previously discussed the impact of these lineup shifts, noting that while he and Ryd lead the songwriting, Sehlin adds his own distinct flavour to the growls. The band's evolution remains marked by a balance of crushing brutality and melodic hooks, a formula that has already garnered them over one billion streams. With much of the new material already completed, Ryd expressed high hopes that the forthcoming record will live up to the vision they have in their minds.
