Dave Lombardo Praises New Generation of Metal Drummers

Dave Lombardo has praised the current generation of metal drummers and musicians, saying the scene continues to produce strong bands worth discovering. The former Slayer drummer said he is particularly interested in encountering newer acts while appearing at festivals after a period of reduced touring.

Lombardo also rejected the tendency for veteran musicians to complain automatically about changes in the music industry. He argues that affordable recording technology, home studios and online information give younger artists opportunities that previous generations did not have. Rather than focusing only on the decline of older business models, he believes musicians should use those tools to create and distribute work independently.

The former Slayer drummer believes digital tools can help artists, but live music remains impossible for AI to replace.

On artificial intelligence, Lombardo drew a distinction between generated music and physical performance. He said software cannot reproduce the sensation of amplified instruments, acoustic drums and a band interacting with an audience in real time. That human and physical element, in his view, protects live music from complete replacement.

Lombardo remains active across several projects. Venamoris, his collaboration with wife Paula Lombardo, released second album “To Cross Or To Burn” through Ipecac Recordings. His wider post-Slayer work has included Mr. Bungle, Misfits, Suicidal Tendencies, Dead Cross, Empire State Bastard, solo percussion music and collaborations with experimental composer John Zorn.
