Sponge Announce Final Studio Album 'Recuerda Tu Muerte' Following New Single Release

Detroit-based rockers SPONGE have unleashed their new single "Self Inflicted Loss", marking the first taste of what has been confirmed as the band's final studio album, "Recuerda Tu Muerte". Scheduled for release on October 2, the upcoming record serves as a concluding chapter for the outfit after 32 years of active service.

"Self Inflicted Loss" is described by lead vocalist Vinnie Dombroski as an unflinching, confessional track underpinned by a tripped-out, dark groove. To accompany the release, the band collaborated with Stoopid Buddy Stoodios—the production house behind "Robot Chicken"—to create a surreal stop-motion animation. The video features action figures modified to resemble the band members, set within a dingy candy corn factory as a nod to the imagery of their gold-certified 1994 debut, "Rotting Pinata".

Produced by Dombroski and guitarist Andy Patalan, "Recuerda Tu Muerte" (Remember Your Death) distils three decades of experience into a final statement. While the band's catalogue includes massive hits like "Plowed" and "Wax Ecstatic", the new material is said to reflect the same "world of human wreckage" seen in their earlier work, albeit through a matured lens.

Following a pair of 2024 releases—the covers collection "1994" and the previously shelved "Planet Girls"—this final outing provides a definitive bookend to their career. "People used to say, 'Well, you got your whole life to make your first record,' and I'm like, 'Nah, I've got my whole life to make my last one, too, right?" claims Dombroski.
