Joey Tempest Reflects on the Enduring Legacy of "The Final Countdown"

Joey Tempest remains undeterred by the massive scale of the band's legacy, admitting that despite its ubiquitous status, he still enjoys performing "The Final Countdown" live. In a recent interview with Barry Robinson of Classic Album Review, Tempest explained that while the band doesn't listen to the track privately at home, the connection they forge with the audience during a live set keeps the fire burning. Whether they are playing a family festival in Denmark or a heavy metal bash in Germany, the track provides a vital surge of energy from both the band and the fans.

Reflecting on the journey since the 1986 release, Tempest admitted he would give his younger self a piece of advice regarding the pressures of fame. While the third album and its title track skyrocketed the band to international stardom, the intensity of that era led to a heightened sense of seriousness. "Today I would say, 'Relax a little bit. It's okay,'" Tempest remarked, noting that he wouldn't want to be nitpicky about the specific lyrical choices made four decades ago.

While "The Final Countdown" remains the definitive anthem that opened doors for the band, Tempest believes their recent output, including the studio album "Come This Madness", represents some of their strongest work to date. The anniversary tour aims to bridge their legendary past with the modern energy of the current lineup.
