Moonspell Announce New Album ‘Far From God’

Moonspell will release their new studio album, “Far From God”, on July 3 through Napalm Records. The Portuguese band will introduce the record with its title track and an accompanying video on March 25, when pre-orders and the Eliran Kantor-designed cover artwork are also expected to be revealed.

Vocalist Fernando Ribeiro describes the album as a deliberate return to gothic metal and has compared its spirit to Moonspell’s 1996 record “Irreligious”. Rather than continuing the broader social and philosophical themes of recent releases, the new material focuses on melody, atmosphere, romanticism and emotional directness. Ribeiro says clean vocals have a substantial role, though the record retains the darker and heavier elements associated with Moonspell.

“Far From God” was recorded in Porto with producer Jaime Gomez Arellano, who also worked on 2021’s “Hermitage”. Ribeiro says the writing process involved an unusually large number of abandoned lyrics and potential titles before the band established a clear direction.

The album follows a period in which Moonspell revisited several parts of their catalogue, including the symphonic “Opus Diabolicum” performance in Lisbon and its subsequent live release. Ribeiro has also cited both foundational gothic rock groups and newer darkwave acts as influences on the album’s atmosphere. Additional singles and two or three videos are planned before release.
