Mastodon Release Visual for 'In The Ruins' Ahead of New LP

Mastodon have unveiled the official music video for "In The Ruins", a heavy, emotionally charged track from their upcoming album "Marrow Deep". Scheduled for release on 28 August via Loma Vista Recordings, the full-length marks a significant turning point for the Atlanta outfit. It is the band's first record following the loss of founding guitarist Brent Hinds and the passing of drummer Brann Dailor's mother, Michele Lawrence.

Produced at West End Sound by Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, and mixed by Andrew Scheps, "Marrow Deep" sees the band navigating a period of profound personal upheaval. The track "In The Ruins" specifically addresses the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, which displaced bassist Troy Sanders and destroyed his home. Mastodon described the song as a cathartic way to process these shared tragedies. The accompanying video from animation studio Hey Beautiful Jerk depicts a one-eyed creature named Frank navigating ruined landscapes, serving as a metaphor for picking up the pieces of a broken life.

Ultimately it's us channeling the loss into a powerful declaration of resilience and catharsis.

This era also introduces new guitarist Nick Johnston and features prominent keyboard work from João Nogueira. While the band remains true to their heavy, expansive roots found on "Hushed And Grim", "Marrow Deep" incorporates influences from Greek mythology's Three Fates to explore themes of destiny and loss. The album also features Josh Homme on "Snakes For Dinner", marking his first appearance on a Mastodon record since 2006's "Blood Mountain". Sanders noted the band feels revitalised, noting that they are currently feeling as united and hungry as they did in their earliest days.
