Hatebreed Say New Album Is Faster and More Thrash-Driven

Hatebreed drummer Matt Byrne says the band’s next studio album will lean more heavily into thrash metal while retaining the groove and hardcore structure that established their sound. The follow-up to 2020’s “Weight Of The False Self” is targeted for 2026.

Byrne described the material as faster, more metallic and occasionally Slayer-influenced. He rejected the idea that Hatebreed should be understood only as a hardcore band, arguing that metal has always formed a major part of the group’s writing. The new songs continue that development while preserving the breakdowns and direct vocal patterns expected by longtime listeners.

The new material is described as fast, Slayer-influenced and among the heaviest Hatebreed have written.

The band introduced the album cycle with “Make The Demons Obey” in July 2025. Byrne says the record was already approximately 85 to 90 percent complete by autumn, although arrangements and release plans were still being refined. Frontman Jamey Jasta had also been meeting with potential labels after revealing that Hatebreed were free agents.

The sessions took place during a period of lineup and health disruption. Guitarist Wayne Lozinak underwent surgery for a benign brain tumour after being diagnosed while touring Europe. Matt Bachand moved from bass to guitar during his absence, with First Blood and Terror musician Carl Schwartz filling the bass position.

Hatebreed celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2024 and continued extensive festival and headline activity throughout 2025. The new album will be their ninth full-length release.
