Mastodon's Brann Dailor Explains the Emotional Weight of 'Marrow Deep'

Mastodon drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor has shed light on the heavy emotional weight behind the title of the band's latest offering, "Marrow Deep". Speaking to iHeartRadio Canada, Dailor explained that the title reflects the profound depth of personal connections, specifically referencing the loss of his mother and the tragic passing of former guitarist Brent Hinds.

Following Hinds' acrimonious departure in early 2025 and his subsequent death in a motorcycle accident just months later, the band faced a period of intense turmoil. Dailor noted that while the band did not want the record to be defined solely by these tragedies, the process of creating the music became a way to lean on one another. The album, which features new guitarist Nick Johnston and significant contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira, was crafted in the wake of these losses, with Dailor describing the creative process as a way to "bare your soul" and tap into the "primitive, ritualistic" aspects of shared art.

Produced at the band's West End Sound studio with Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, "Marrow Deep" serves as the band's first full-length without Hinds. The record also features the single "Snakes For Dinner", which boasts a guest appearance from Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme. The band will take the new material on the road for "The Poisonous Weapons Tour" starting in September, supported by Deafheaven and Alcest.
