Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is Emperor’s attempt to make symphonic black metal more deliberate, more technical and more compositionally controlled. Compared with In the Nightside Eclipse, the arrangements are clearer, the performances tighter and the transitions more calculated. The result is often impressive, but not always equally affecting.

The album’s architecture is impressive, but its finest moments occur when the complexity suddenly resolves into a clear melodic strike.

Ye Entrancemperium begins with extraordinary force. Its opening riff has the directness that much of the album avoids, and the track’s speed feels purposeful rather than ornamental. Thus Spake the Nightspirit is more expansive, moving between blast-driven sections and grand melodic passages with a confidence that shows how rapidly Emperor had developed as arrangers.

The Loss and Curse of Reverence is the album’s most complete song. Its central themes are memorable, the keyboards enhance rather than obscure the guitars, and the shifts in pace feel inevitable. With Strength I Burn reaches for something even larger, combining progressive structure with a genuinely dramatic conclusion. These tracks justify the album’s reputation for ambition.

Yet the record can also feel overworked. Ensorcelled by Khaos and The Acclamation of Bonds contain excellent individual passages, but their constant movement sometimes prevents the strongest ideas from settling. Complexity becomes less effective when every transition demands attention. The cleaner production helps expose the musicianship, though it also removes some of the supernatural haze that made the debut so immersive.

Ihsahn’s guitar writing is the dominant force throughout, while the keyboards are used with greater restraint and harmonic purpose. Trym’s drumming is precise and athletic, giving the music a sharper rhythmic profile than before. The band sound formidable, even when the songs become emotionally remote.

Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is a highly accomplished record whose influence is understandable. It expands black metal’s structural possibilities without abandoning aggression. Still, admiration comes more easily than attachment. Its architecture is remarkable, but its disciplined complexity sometimes keeps the listener outside the walls.
