David Ellefson Explains Metal Church's 'Tour Smarter, Not Harder' Approach

David Ellefson has laid out the pragmatic philosophy guiding the rejuvenated Metal Church. Speaking with Stefan Nilsson of Roppongi Rocks, the former Megadeth bassist explained that the band is prioritising a sustainable, enjoyable touring cycle as they prepare for life beyond their fall 2026 North American run with Armored Saint.

"It's about, okay, the old 'tour smarter, not harder,' so that, first of all, everybody still enjoys it," Ellefson stated. He noted that while 2027 is already framed on the calendar, the band is currently focused on the joy of new material rather than the grind of constant travel. The current line-up—featuring founding guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof, Rick Van Zandt, drummer Ken Mary, and vocalist Brian Allen—leverages decades of experience to avoid the exhaustion of the past.

Ellefson recalled Vanderhoof's struggles in the 1980s after touring with Metallica, highlighting the financial realities of the industry. Today, the veterans are looking for the "sweet spot" where the music remains fresh for fans while remaining profitable enough to pay the bills. The current iteration of the band, which recently performed in Mexico, debuted their new album 'Dead To Rights' in April. By moving away from the "young ambitions" of their early days, the veterans aim to keep the project vibrant and manageable for everyone involved.
