Charlotte Wessels's THE Obsession to release concept album 'Mute Swan Empire'

Charlotte Wessels is set to release a new full-length studio album, "Mute Swan Empire", under her new moniker THE OBSESSION. Scheduled for release on 5 February 2027 via Napalm Records, the record serves as a sprawling, character-driven concept piece. The 15-track collection explores the end of the Anthropocene, depicting various human archetypes and their distinct responses to climate breakdown, social injustice, and the collapse of familiar futures.

Following her tenure with DELAIN, Wessels has crafted a sonic multiverse that refuses to be pinned down by a single genre. The album explores a spectrum of human reactions—ranging from denial and rage to faith and hope—through a blend of heavy music and alternative influences. Produced by Joost Van Den Broek at Sandlane Studios with arrangements by Timo Somers, the record aims for a cohesive band identity that balances heavy, hard-hitting passages with moments of striking intimacy.

I didn't want an album that simply points fingers or offers easy answers. I wanted to explore the contradictions.

"I started to recognize these recurring themes and archetypes, and eventually realized they were all part of a much bigger story," Wessels explains. The title "Mute Swan Empire" references the myth of the swan song, questioning whether humanity will have a final act of grace or if the swan will remain silent as ecological and social systems fail. The album arrives just ahead of Wessels's first-ever headlining tour across Europe, which kicks off in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, on 4 February 2027.
