Anthrax Bassist Frank Bello Reflects on 'Darker' Tones of Cursum Perficio

Anthrax bassist Frank Bello is content with the darker sonic trajectory of the band's latest studio effort, "Cursum Perficio". Speaking to Rockum TV, Bello explained that while the shift in tone might seem intentional, the heavy, aggressive edge is simply a byproduct of the band's current state of mind.

"I don't think you try to do it. I think it just comes," Bello noted, suggesting that the band's inherent heaviness is a natural evolution of their nearly 40-year career. He admitted that the record feels like a darker reflection of their current reality, perhaps influenced by the world at large, but ultimately serves to heighten the album's overall weight.

Bello highlighted the importance of the creative process, noting that the band refused to settle for subpar material during the writing phase. The trio of Bello, Scott Ian, and Charlie Benante insisted on being in the same room to forge the songs, rejecting the pitfalls of remote collaboration. For Bello, the "gut feeling" of a track being ready is paramount to maintaining the Anthrax identity.

Following the release of the first three singles, Bello expressed genuine excitement for the remaining tracks, which he believes will satisfy even the most demanding fans. The album, which hit shelves in September, marks a significant milestone in the band's progression, delivering an aggressive sound that aligns with their storied history while forging a new path forward.
